Who was

Al Gilbert?

Al Gilbert

– Al Gilbert opened his first dance studio in Hollywood, California in 1947.

Ten years later he established Stepping Tones Ltd. which, over the next half-century, produced more than 1,000 song and dance training aids and graded syllabi for Tap and Jazz dancing. His tap and jazz instructional materials made a major impact on the way these forms were taught internationally. Mr. Gilbert created music and choreography, recorded them with vocal instruction and written notes, and marketed them as records, tapes, CDs, and videos. His volumes of work are available at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

Born Allesandro Zicari in upstate New York, Mr. Gilbert learned to tap dance on the streets and danced with his brothers, Charlie and Pat (Rico), and his sister, Rose, in nightclubs and theatres until World War II, when he served in the Army Air Corps and performed for the troops. After his 1945 discharge, he moved to Hollywood and danced in The Jolson Story. But his real love lay in making classes fun at Al Gilbert’s Hollywood Theatrical Dance School.

Mr. Gilbert taught internationally at private studios and major dance conventions such as Dance Masters of America, Dance Educators of America, and Dance Olympus. He also created the Al Gilbert Dance Seminars and wrote Al Gilbert’s Tap Dictionary: Encyclopedia of Tap Terminology and Related Information. His knowledge, energy, and generosity distinguished his educational work; he could simplify steps and motivate students while clarifying techniques for teachers. He was honoured by many dance organizations for his tireless efforts to improve the teaching of American dance. Mr. Gilbert’s immeasurable influence will live on through his students and their students.

In 2003, Nancy Hays of Edmonton took the reins of the Gilbert Dance Examinations here in Canada and has continued Mt Gilbert’s dance legacy. Now, in 2020, she has passed the torch to Vanessa Cowan to continue his Examination program.

The Pied Piper

As I approach my 80th year
There are so many memories I hold dear.
Read on now and you will see
How the “Pied Piper of Dance” came to be.
Along time ago, as a little boy,
Dancing gave me such great joy.
With my sis’ and my brother too…
We did our dance, the “Old Soft Shoe”.
Later on as a Swing Dance Teen,
I had me a Jitterbug Queen.
We won contests and you know…
The war came along and I had to go.
In India, I was a Sergeant and…
In China, I danced with an Air Force band.
With the Flying Tigers, I took the dare,
Rode to victory with my tap shoes and a swivel chair.
In Hollywood, I danced in The Jolson Story,
It gave me no fame; it gave me no glory.
But I got to dance with that “Singing Fool”…
Al Jolson… Gosh, that was cool!
I started to teach in 1947
It was okay… but it wasn’t heaven.
I didn’t know how or what to teach…
I felt like a preacher who couldn’t preach.
Then one day I heard myself say,
“I am here to dance for you today.
Let’s tap tap tap and boogie-woogie too.”
For that, dear Lord, I do thank you!
That was the start and then I knew
That I had to continue and follow through.
I began to teach across the land…
The Stepping Tones gave me a helping hand.
Betty and Lou gave me the chance
To make music for the world of dance.
Now more than 50 years have gone by…
I am grateful and happy to say that I
Continue to write and create and I pray
That I will continue for yet another day.
When the real Pied Piper played his flute
All the children did think he was cute.
The story goes that they loved him so…
They followed him wherever he would go.
If this be true, I am oh so proud
I was to shout real clear and loud…
As the Pied Piper of Dance, I want to say
How proud I am of this honor day.
I promise to always try to do,
All that I can to help all of you…
Enjoy the Wonderful World of Dance
With me “The Pied Piper of Dance”.
